The Role of Data Science in Astronomy and Interstellar Exploration
Space has always been a fascinating frontier for humans. From the first satellite, Sputnik 1, in 1957, to the amazing Mars rovers, our adventures in space show our love for discovery, creativity, and courage. Exploring space is a big dream, always pushing us to learn more and go further.Nowadays, data science is making a meaningful contribution to space technology. It's changing how we think about space. Being able to gather, understand, and use lots of data has helped us get to know the universe better and has changed how we explore and move through space. This article will examine how important data science is in space technology and how it's changing our journey into space. We'll cover how data science is making our space missions smarter and helping us solve the mysteries of space...

VOPlot v1.8 Beta
VOPlot v1.8Beta includes many enhancements and bug fixes. To name a few v1.8Beta supports multi-grid plots for 2D Scatter-Plot which allows the user to have multiple plots having grid size from 1x1 to 3x3 in a single window. Paginated view is added to see data in tabular format which allows user to navigate systematically. Provision to label Lat/Long lines is also added. Users can now plot a cumulative histogram for all histogram types. VOPlot 1.8Beta shows the metadata of a FITS file instantaneously while the actual loading happens in background. VOPlot v1.8Beta also provides better handling of "faulty data" while parsing an ASCII file.

THE FON ASTROGRAPHIC CATALOGUE (FONAC V3.0)

The catalog of star positions and B-magnitudes of Northern Sky Survey project has been created under the motto of the rational use of resources accumulated in UkrVO JDA (Joint Digital Archive) in MAO NASU. The total amount of processed plates is 2260. Digitizing of astronegatives has been carried out with the help of Microtek ScanMaker 9800XL TMA and Epson Expression 10000XL scanners, with the scanning mode - 1200 dpi, the linear size of the plates - 30x30 cm or 13,000 x 13,000 px. The catalog contains 19,451,751 stars and galaxies with B ≤ 16.5m for the epoch of 1988.1.

Coordinates of stars and galaxies were obtained in the Tycho-2 reference system, and B-values in the system of photoelectric standards. The internal accuracy of the catalog for all the objects is σRA,DEC = ± 230 mas and σB = ± 0.14m (for stars in the range of B = 7m -14m errors are σRA,DEC = ± 100 mas and σB = ± 0.07m).

Convergence between the calculated and reference positions is σRA,DEC = ± 60 mas, and the convergence with photoelectric stellar B-magnitudes is σBB = ± 0.15m.

External accuracy from the comparison with UCAC-4 is σRA,DEC = ± 300 mas( 18 742 932 or 96.36% stars and galaxies were cross identified).

The catalogue FONAC is available on the MAO NASU home page (ftp://ftp.mao.kiev.ua/pub/astro/fon-3.0/).

For the circumpolar region (from 58 to 90 degrees) of Northern Sky Survey project the catalog of star positions and B-magnitudes has been created under the motto of the rational use of resources accumulated in UkrVO JDA (Joint Digital Archive) in MAO NASU. The total amount of processed plates is 477. Digitizing of astronegatives has been carried out with the help of Microtek ScanMaker 9800XL TMA and Epson Expression 10000XL scanners, with the scanning mode — 1200 dpi, the linear size of the plates — 30x30 cm or 13000x13000 px. The catalog contains 1 975 967 stars and galaxies with B ≤ 16.5m for the epoch of 1985.28. The coordinates of stars and galaxies were obtained in the Tycho-2 reference system, and B-valuein the system of photoelectric standards. The internal accuracy of the catalog for all the objects is σRA,DEC = 230 mas and σB = 0.12m (for stars in the range of B = 8m...14m errors are σRA = 110 mas and σB = ± 0.06m). Convergence between the calculated and reference positions is σRA,DEC = 60 mas (for 171 124 stars from Tycho-2), and the conver ence with photoelectric stellar B-magnitudes is σB = ± 0.15m (for 5130 stars). External accuracy from the comparison with UCAC-4 is σRA,DEC = ± 330 mas (1 928 367 stars and galaxies were cross-identified).

Star catalog FONAC enhancement (MAO NASU) down to 16m (FONAK60D).

The catalogue of positions and star magnitudes of 1 108 603 stars in 60o zone of declination, obtained from digitized images of FON (Northern Sky Survey observational program, 1980-1998) plates, is the practical realization of dedicated MIDAS/ROMAFOT software application. Plates were obtained on the Double Wide-angle Astrograph(DWA) MAO NAS of Ukraine with 2-fold overlapping scheme in centers of plates and 4-fold overlapping on their edges. 102 plates (204 frames) have been used for astrometric and photometric calibration procedure elaboration.

Plate calibration has been made with Tycho2 catalogue as reference. Residuals of reference stars, averaged in the 10-20 pixel area, were used as corrections for scanner systematic errors before the second iteration.

R.m.s. errors of unit weight are of ±230 mas and ±330 mas for X and Y in separate processing of two scans and ±200 mas, ±230 mas in combined procedure. Photometric curves of two expositions, built from photoelectric and CCD standard for different plates, give the estimations of photometric accuracy, which averages 0.19 m - 0.21 m in В-band.

The total amount of registered objects is around 5.5 millions. After data averaging over two- and four- fold areas the resulted catalog comprises 1.1 million entries. Its positional accuracy, estimated in comparison with PPMX and UCAC catalogs, is ±230 mas and the photometric one is ±0.18 m. For stars 10m-13m the positional accuracy is comparable with that of radial-scanning coordinatometer PARSeC, previously used for photographic plates measurements.

THE FON ASTROGRAPHIC CATALOGUE (FONAC V1.0)

FONAC is the catalogue of positions, proper motions and BJ-magnitudes for 2, 004, 701 stars of the Astrographic Catalogue (AC) including the (B - V )J -magnitudes for 1, 712, 420 stars and (B - R)J -values for 1, 779, 442 stars covering the northern sky between declinations +90 and -2 degrees (Kislyuk et al., 2000). The average epoch of positions is 1988.19. The catalogue is based on measurements of more than 1700 plates which were taken with the wide- angle astrograph of the Main Astronomical Observatory in Kiev within the FON (Photographic Survey of the Northern Sky) project. The AC data were used both as the input catalogue for measuring machine PARSEC (Programming Automatic Radial-Scanning Coordinatometer) and as the first epochs for determination of proper motions of stars.

The ACT Reference Catalogue as well as the Guide Star and USNO A2.0 catalogues were applied for the reductions of positions and determination of photometric characteristics of stars. Median precision of the FONAC data are ±0.2", ±0.003"/yr and ±0.18m in positions, proper motions and magnitudes of stars, respectively.

The catalogue FONAC is available on the MAO NASU home page (ftp://ftp.mao.kiev.ua/pub/astro/fonac).
