The Role of Data Science in Astronomy and Interstellar Exploration
Space has always been a fascinating frontier for humans. From the first satellite, Sputnik 1, in 1957, to the amazing Mars rovers, our adventures in space show our love for discovery, creativity, and courage. Exploring space is a big dream, always pushing us to learn more and go further. Nowadays, data science is making a meaningful contribution to space technology. It's changing how we think about space. Being able to gather, understand, and use lots of data has helped us get to know the universe better and has changed how we explore and move through space...

VOPlot v1.8 Beta
VOPlot v1.8Beta includes many enhancements and bug fixes. To name a few v1.8Beta supports multi-grid plots for 2D Scatter-Plot which allows the user to have multiple plots having grid size from 1x1 to 3x3 in a single window. Paginated view is added to see data in tabular format which allows user to navigate systematically. Provision to label Lat/Long lines is also added. Users can now plot a cumulative histogram for all histogram types. VOPlot 1.8Beta shows the metadata of a FITS file instantaneously while the actual loading happens in background. VOPlot v1.8Beta also provides better handling of "faulty data" while parsing an ASCII file.

Biography:

He was born December 10, 1928 at Bashtechky village of Zhazhkivsky district of Cherkasy region of the Ukrainian SSR (now the Kyiv region of Ukraine) in the family of a village teacher. After graduating in 1952 Physics Department of T. G. Shevchenko Kiev State University, he was enrolled in graduate school of Main Astronomical Observatory of the Academy of Sciences of Ukrainian SSR", which he graduated in 1954 and where under the guidance of prof. A. A. Yakovkin he completed the study 40 cm. Astrograph of Main Astronomical Observatory of the Academy of Sciences of Ukrainian SSR. Based on this work has prepared his thesis "Study of the 400 mm Astrograph of the Main Astronomical Observatory of the Academy of Sciences of Ukraine", which he defended in 1955.

Since then, all his working life was associated with Main Astronomical Observatory of the Academy of Sciences of Ukrainian SSR. He organized the Observatory Department of Physics of the Sun, becoming its first head in 1964 and was in this position until 1983; for his initiative and his participate in 1966-1968, a solar double monochromator diffraction was created.

In 1975 he defended in Main Astronomical Observatory of the Academy of Sciences of USSR (Pulkovo urban village) his doctoral dissertation "field and velocity structure of the solar photosphere." He initiated in 1978 Solar Physics Division participated in the international space project "Coronas". He was the leader of many scientific expeditions of total solar eclipses observations.

In 1983 he went to teach astronomy and chair of the Kiev State University and worked in this position until 1987. However, research in the Main Astronomical Observatory of the Academy of Sciences of Ukrainian SSR he left: he was concurrently chief researcher.

In the 1983-1985 Participated in the installation of new specialized solar telescope EDM-26 for absolute measurements of the solar spectrum at the peak Terskol (village in Kabardino-Balkaria, Elbrus) and in 1985-1990 Horizontal large solar telescope with double diffraction monochromator. Also he worked on experiments in space to study the global oscillations of the Sun. Together with colleagues wrote 160 scientific papers and 3 monographs. In 1990, work on the construction of self-consistent system oscillator strengths of more than 2000 spectral lines of 49 chemical elements in the solar spectrum was awarded the premium name N. P. Barabashova of Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. Coordinated solar research in the former Soviet Union as the head section of the Sun and the working group "Radiation and structure of the Sun".

He died January 20, 1994 in Kyiv City.

He was a scientist, astronomer, philosopher and poet.

In 2003 he was posthumously awarded the State Prize of Ukraine in Science and Technology series of studies (co-author) "Development of theoretical foundations and unique supervisory framework in Golosiyevo and on Terskol to study the Sun and the solar system."

In his honor, a small celestial body in the solar system (157271) 2004 RK222, discovered by Kovalchuk G. U. and Lokot V. at the Andrushivka Observatory, was named "Gurtovenko".
