Biography:
He was born on March 3, 1886 in the Tombov city of Tambov province of the Russian Empire.
He was a mathematician and astronomer by education. Graduated from the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics of Petrograd University.
In 1912-1917 he taught in Moscow City, was the secretary of the Ukrainian Publishing Society founded by M. S. Hrushevsky. Later, he moved to Kyiv City, gave lectures on mathematics, physics and cosmography in the senior classes of the Cyril and Methodius brotherhood Second Ukrainian Gymnasium.
In 1920-1924 he worked in educational bodies of the Chernihiv Region, was elected head of the local "Prosvita", organized the Chernihiv Scientific Society.
Since the mid-1920s he focused on issues of Ukrainian scientific terminology.
Since 1924, he was a full-time employee of the Natural Sciences Department of the Institute of the Ukrainian Scientific Language of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences, since March 1925 he was its scientific secretary, and since October 1926 he worked as the director of the Institute of the Ukrainian Scientific Language of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences, as well as the editor of its organ "Bulletin of the Institute of the Ukrainian Scientific Language", published 2 issues of the magazine in 1928 and 1930. He took an active part in developing the main foundations of the development of Ukrainian terminology: reliance on the vernacular, creation of neologisms based on the vernacular, wide use of the achievements of terminological work in Galicia. In 1929, he was arrested during the preparation of the trial of the Union for the Liberation of Ukraine, accused of nationalistic damage, sentenced to exile and 8 years of imprisonment and deprivation of rights for the next 3 years. He served his sentence in Solovki — in a special purpose camp and prison. On February 14, 1938, he was sentenced to death by the decision of a separate troika of the UNKVS of the Leningrad region. He was executed on February 17 of the same year in the Solovetsky Archipelago, when almost 200 people were executed in one day.
He was rehabilitated by the Supreme Court of the Ukrainian SSR on August 1, 1989, and in Russia by the Arkhangelsk Region Prosecutor's Office on July 26 of the same year.
