AO LNU Plate Archive   Astronomical Observatory of Lviv National University (AO LNU) is the owner of valuable archive that stores approximately 8 000 of photographic plates from 1939, including nearly 6 000 direct images of the northern sky. The archive is partly digitized and images are available via the joint search pages of AO LNU and MAO NASU.

IRA UTR-2 catalogue of RS   The very-low frequency sky survey of discrete sources has been obtained in the Institute of Radio Astronomy of the Ukrainian National Academy of Sciences (Kharkov, Ukraine) with the UTR-2 radio telescope at a number of the lowest frequencies used in contemporary radio astronomy within the range from 10 to 25 MHz.

Mykolaiv AO stellar catalogues   27 astrometric stellar catalogues of Mykolaiv Aastronomical Observatory (MykAO) in VOTable format are available for downloading

AO KNU Historic Plate Archive   AO KNU glass collection contains about 20 thousand photographic plates. Historical part of the archive was received during 1898-1946 and now is being digitized.

The Role of Data Science in Astronomy and Interstellar Exploration
Space has always been a fascinating frontier for humans. From the first satellite, Sputnik 1, in 1957, to the amazing Mars rovers, our adventures in space show our love for discovery, creativity, and courage. Exploring space is a big dream, always pushing us to learn more and go further. Nowadays, data science is making a meaningful contribution to space technology. It's changing how we think about space. Being able to gather, understand, and use lots of data has helped us get to know the universe better and has changed how we explore and move through space...

GRID-based Virtual Observatory VIRGO.UA
VO VIRGO.UA for cosmology and astrophysics is a segment of VO «Infrastructure»- a virtual organization, which deals with ensuring the provision of standards for Grid Services for virtual organizations, to ensure reliability functioning of the Ukrainian power grid, Grid training for users and administrators of the Grid sites, as well as the creation of technical conditions UNG for entry into the international grid community...

WDC-Ukraine
WDC-Ukraine is a part of World Data Center System of the International Council of Science (ICSU). Among the basic tasks of WDC-Ukraine there is collection, handling and storage of science data and giving access to it for usage both in science research and study process. That include contemporary tutoring technologies and resources of e-libraries and archives; remote access to own information resources for the wide circle of scientists from the universities and science institutions of Ukraine...

IVOA NEWSLETTER
US VAO Data Discovery Portal
Find datasets from thousands of astronomical collections known to the VO and over wide areas of the sky. This includes important collections from archives around the world. Feedback on your experience with the tool is appreciated -- please send your comments, suggestions, and questions to the VAO Help Desk.

US VAO Cross-Comparison Tool
Perform fast positional cross-matches between an input table of up to 1 million sources and common astronomical source catalogs, such as 2MASS, SDSS DR7 and USNO-B. Feedback on your experience with the tool is appreciated -- please send your comments, suggestions, and questions to the VAO Help Desk.

VOPlot v1.8 Beta
VOPlot v1.8Beta includes many enhancements and bug fixes. To name a few v1.8Beta supports multi-grid plots for 2D Scatter-Plot which allows the user to have multiple plots having grid size from 1x1 to 3x3 in a single window. Paginated view is added to see data in tabular format which allows user to navigate systematically. Provision to label Lat/Long lines is also added. Users can now plot a cumulative histogram for all histogram types. VOPlot 1.8Beta shows the metadata of a FITS file instantaneously while the actual loading happens in background. VOPlot v1.8Beta also provides better handling of "faulty data" while parsing an ASCII file.

 Shulberg Alexander Mikhailovich (Rakhm³lyevich)

General data:

27.05.1914 - 01.09.1994

Place of birth: Odessa city, Kherson Province, Russian Empire

Studied in: Odessa State University (since 2000, I. I. Mechnikov Odessa National University) (1937);

Key interests: theoretical astronomy, variable stars, stellar systems. PhD Thesis: Theory determine the elements of the orbits of binary stars which entering the zone eclipse with extended atmospheres on the theory Kozyrev-Chandrasekhar. (1947 );

Biography:

He was born May 27, 1914 in Odessa city Kherson province of the Russian Empire in the family of a doctor.

While studying at a labor school, he had little income due to private lessons.

After graduating from school, the boy continued his studies at the railway technical school, where in practice he traveled as an assistant engineer at the locomotive. He finished the technical school in 1932 and, after obtaining the qualification of railway equipment, he went to work in a specialty "locomotive engineer".

Soon the young man enrolled in the evening department of the Odessa Institute of Public Education, based on which in 1933 Odessa State University was restored. It was difficult to combine work and study and in 1934 the student switched to the faculty of the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics of the Odessa State University.

In 1937 he graduated from Odessa State University, he was promoted to graduate school at Odessa University and immediately began to teach astronomical and other disciplines to students, schoolchildren, and students of various educational institutions. His lectures were read until 1988, releasing a large number of astronomers.

In 1940, he entered the ranks of the Soviet Army in private, served in artillery intelligence, in the first days of the war captured a hostile officer. He was gifted with polyglot fluent in 6 languages: English, German, French, Russian, Ukrainian, and Jewish-Yiddish, and he worked in the propagandistic section on the front line of the front. He was thrice wounded and heavily wrinkled. He graduated from the war of 1941-1945 at the hospital in 1946 in the rank of captain with a large number of awards.

In 1946, returning to Odessa city, a scientist came to I. I. Mechnikov Odessa State University and became an assistant, soon became a senior lecturer in the Department of Astronomy. On the recommendation of V. P. Tsesevich, the scientist engaged in theoretical studies of close double stars.He became the first astronomer to apply the theory of extended atmospheres of Kozyrev-Chandrasekhar stars to the determination of the elements of the orbits of eclipsing variable stars.

The theme of the candidate's dissertation, which was protected by the astronomer in 1947, was the development of the theory of determining the elements of double-star orbits. obscured, with extended atmospheres in the theory of Kozyrev-Chandrasekar. He has published his knowledge on this topic in two monographs, one of which is written in co-authorship and two methodical manuals.

In next year after the defense of PhD, he became associate professor of the Department of Astronomy of the I. I. Mechnikov Odessa State University, and in 1955 he became part-time deputy director at the Astronomical Observatory of the University.

As the organizer of science, he made a great contribution to the development of the Odessa astronomical observatory in the postwar period, when the observatory was greatly expanded (deputy director), the Odessa planetarium, the Odessa branch of the VAGO.

He lectured to students courses of General and Practical Astrophysics, Star Astronomy, a special course "Eclipse of Double Stars".

I was very fond of cycling. He was outstanding in Odessa, a cyclist, figure skater, track racer, built a cycling track with his comrades.

On September 1, 1994 he died in Odessa city.

The main directions of the scientific astronomer were stellar systems and variable stars.
