Biography:
He was born February 19, 1937 in Nikolaev city of Nikolaev region of Ukrainian SSR. He was the fourth of eight children of Ivan Ivanovch Chyuryumova, staff officer of the Soviet Army, and poet Antonina Mikhailovna Churyumova ( her maiden name is Aleksandrova).
Because his father was a soldier, the family often had to move from place to place. The war found their local self Zhytomyr region, where they survived the first bombing. From there they moved to Kyiv. In those turbulent times, when Klium was four years old, he and his mother were late in the train, which was taken by people shot by the Germans in Kiev City. Everyone who drove in it, died ... Then the family was evacuated, first to the Mykhailivka city of Stalingrad (now Volgograd) field, and then - to Stalingrad. When the Germans came to town, they are under the bombs landed on the ship that sailed down the Volga to Astrakhan, then - across the Caspian Sea to Gurieva (now Almaty) at the mouth of the Urals, then the Urals to the Urals and from there by train to Novosibirsk region (Kirza village on the Ob river), which were in 1944 returned there in Mykhailivka of Stalingrad area where Klim went to school. His father died during the Second World War in May 1942 near Kharkiv city.
In 1949 the family moved to Kiev City. After seventh grade, he entered the Kiev Railway College, graduating with honors in 1955. He got a recommendation for admission to higher education.
In 1960 graduated at the Department of Astronomy and Space Physics T. G. Shevchenko Kyiv Order of Lenin State University in "Physics-Astronomy" and he was sent to the polar geophysical station in Tiksi Bay of Yakut ASSR. There he studied the aurora, earth currents and the ionosphere.
In 1962, when he returned to Kyiv City, went to work at the factory "Arsenal", where he participated in the development astronavigation equipment for rockets and tested it at the Baikonur Cosmodrome and Plesetsk.
During the 1965-1968 he enrolled in graduate school at Kiev National University majoring in "Astrophysics" under the guidance of Prof. S. K Vsehsvjatsky. After this, the remaining work researcher at the Department of Astronomy at KNU. Watched the comet at the suburban station of Kiev University in the village forester during astronomical expeditions in the highlands of Central Asia, the Caucasus, Siberia, in Primorsky Krai, the Chukotka and Kamchatka.
In 1969 he participated in the expedition that university dressed in three persons: Klim Churyumov and Svetlana Gerasimenko and other person, to observe periodic comet in Alma-Ata, in Astrophysical Institute (now the Astrophysical Institute of the V. G. Fesenkov).
In 1972 he defended his PhD dissertation "Reseach of comets of Ikeyya-Seki (1967n), Honda (1968s), Tago-Sato-Kosak (1969) and a new short-period Churyumov-Gerasimenko's comet from photographic observations."
In 1993 he defended his doctoral dissertation "Evolutionary physical processes in comets" in the Space Research Institute of RAS (Moscow City) which was re-registered at the Main Astronomical Observatory of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine in 1995.
Since 1998 professor working at the Astronomical Observatory of Kiev University, head of astrometry and small bodies of the solar system. In January of 2004 by the Presidium of the Society "Knowledge", he was appointed director of the educational center "Kyiv Planetarium" (according to other data, he was the director of the planetarium during 2002-2016). He also holds the position of President of the Ukrainian Society of Astronomy. He is a member of the International Astronomical Union in 1979, the European Astronomical Union in 1992, Ukrainian Astronomical Association since 1992; Honored Worker of Education of Ukraine in 1998 For many years he was the Scientific Secretary of the Working Group on Physics of Comets Astronomical Council of the USSR. Since 1984 (according to other data since 1884) he is a member of the New York Academy of Sciences. He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine since May 6, 2006.
The scientist was awarded two medals "For the discovery of new astronomical objects", gold (1986) and two silver (1975 and 1987), medals "1500 Years of Kyiv" (1982) and "Veteran of Labor" (1987), the II and III degree Orders of Merit (2003), the diploma-certificate of the International Guard of Halley's Comet (1986), the Taras Shevchenko Prize of Taras Shevchenko Kyiv National University (2004).
Since 2002, he has been the editor-in-chief of the popular science astronomy magazine "Our Sky".
He was a member of the International Eurasian Astronomical Society.
At the end of July 2013, Churyumov K.I. photographed the bright trail of a twilight bolide over Kyiv City. After that, Churyumov K.I. , Kruchynenko V.G., Vidmachenko A.P., Steklov A.F. came to a conclusion about the need to create a ground-based aerospace monitoring service.
On October 14, 2016, the astronomer died due to a stroke in Kharkiv city and was buried in Kyiv City.
Major works are devoted to the physics of small bodies in the solar system: comets and asteroids. He has published more than 1000 scientific publications, including 5 books and 5 manuals. There was a scientific consultant on astronomy during the second edition of Ukrainian Soviet Encyclopedia. He discovered two comets: short-period comets Chyuryumova-Gerasimenko in 1969 and long-period Chyuryumov-Solodovnikov's comet in 1986 his name in 1984 named the planet №2627, and astronomer Nikolai Stepanovich Chernykh named by him open asteroid number 3942 name "Churivanniya" after two Ivan Churyumov, who are Klim Ivanovich Churyumov's father and brother.
It is known as a children's writer and poet. He is the author of popular science books and children's writer - the author of several collections of poems for kids ("kids of specialties", "kids about animals", "baby on boat", "Math for kids" (co-author), "The Adventures of Dino dinosaur"). Author of more than 1000 popular science articles in various newspapers and magazines. He initiated the assignment of names of Ukrainian writers and scientists to small planets.
Eleven PhD theses in physics of comets and the theory and methods of teaching astronomy were protected under the leadership of K.I. Churyumov.
He was a participant in more than 30 expeditions to observe comets, solar eclipses and study the aurora borealis; searched for meteorite craters on the Earth's surface; observed hundreds of comets in various observatories around the world; took a direct part in launching rockets at the Baikonur and Plesetsk cosmodromes.
