Biography:
He was born on May 1, 1947 in Slovyansk city of Donetsk region of the Ukrainian SSR.
In 1970 he graduated from the T. G. Shevchenko Kyiv Order of Lenin State University of with the .
In 1973 he came to work at the Special Astrophysical Observatory and went from junior researcher to director and chief researcher of the Special Astrophysical Observatory of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
Since the beginning of his work at the Special Astrophysical Observatory, he has taken an active part in equipping the 6th Large Azimuthal Telescope with modern light receivers and spectral equipment. He and his colleagues for the first time in the USSR developed and implemented on the telescope methods of two-dimensional and multi-object spectroscopy. In 1991, he was awarded the USSR State Prize in Science and Technology for his series of works entitled "Creation of Digital Television Devices for the Study of Extremely Weak Astronomical Objects on the Large Azimuth Telescope of the USSR Academy of Sciences".
In the 1980s, the astronomer and co-authors conducted comparative photometric and spectral studies of Seifert and normal galaxies. The motions of the gas to the galactic center responsible for "feeding" the active nucleus were studied in detail. He was awarded the degree of Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences for a set of works on the study of active galactic nuclei.
As a result of research on the Large Azimuth Telescope of spiral galaxy disks, the astronomer and his colleagues discovered giant gas vortices. For his work "Prophecy and the discovery of new structures in spiral galaxies" he was awarded the State Prize of the Russian Federation in 2003 in the field of science and technology as part of a team of authors. Since 2005, he and his staff at the Large Azimuth Telescope have performed large-scale polarimetric studies of the active nuclei of galaxies, gravitational lenses, peculiar stars, and small bodies in the solar system. He developed and implemented a new method for determining the masses of black holes in the nuclei of galaxies based on spectropolarimetry in broad emission lines.
In 1983 he defended his dissertation on "Comparative research of global parameters of Seifert galaxies ", and in 1990 a doctoral dissertation on" Structure and evolution of active galaxies ".
He was awarded state awards: the Medal for Merit in 1981 and the Order of Friendship in 1999.
He died on December 21, 2020.
For many years he headed the school of research of active galactic nuclei, his name is associated with the most important hardware developments in the field of extragalactic astronomy.
He is the author of more than 250 scientific papers. The instruments developed and created by him are successfully used for astrophysical research on large and small Russian telescopes (SCORPIO and SCORPIO-2 on the Large Azimuth Telescope, ADAM at the Sayan Observatory, MAGIC at the Zeiss-1000 Special Astrophysical Observatory).
He successfully worked with young people and brought them to an independent scientific life. Six candidate dissertations have been completed and defended under his scientific supervision.
